BIOGRAPHY ~ Iola Geneva Hicks Kaestner
Graceland University, Lamoni, IowaIola Geneva Hicks Kaestner was born in Burkheart, Missouri, on February 1, 1903, the daughter of Mr. and Cora Alice Hicks.
A 1922 Graceland graduate, Iola Kaestner earner her B.S. in home economics at Iowa State College (present-day Iowa State University, Ames) in 1943, and obtained her M.S. degreee in foods and nutrition from the University of Wisconson in 1950. Iola taught at the public school level, first during 1922-1924.
Iola's husband, Hirum Henry Kaestner, died in 1936 as a result of a vehicle accident.
Iola then taught at Lamoni Junior High School from 1937 to 1942, then home economics at Oskaloosa Iowa High school from 1943. Iola returned to Graceland as a member of the home economics faculty in 1946. She developed a reputation for emphasizing that an effective home is vital to society. Iola also taught courses in art and phsycology.
Iola retired in 1971 as professor emerita.
NOTE: Hyrum Henry Kaestner (also spelled Hiram) was born in Iowa on January 20, 1872, and died on December 11, 1936. He was interred at Rose Hill Cemetery, Lamoni, Iowa.
Iola died on May 12, 1988, in Spokane, Washington. She was interred at Riverview Cemetery, Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.
