Biography ~ Dr. Harvey Howard Grice
Graceland University, Lamoni, Iowa

Harvey Howard Grice was born on Septmeber 25, 1912, in Flint, Michigan.

He received his BS degree in Chemical Engineering in 1937; Ohio State University; his MS degree in Chemical Engineering in 1938, Ohio State University; and his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering in 1941, Ohio State University.

During World War II, Harvey served as a Corporal [Lieutenant-Colonel by some accounts] in the U. S. Army.

Harvey's professional course took him to Kankakee [Illinois] operations of General Foods Corporation where for 13 years he held positions ranging from Project Engineer to Plant Manager and Manufacturing & Engineering Manager. In addition to his industrial experience, he spent six years as president of Graceland College in Lamoni, Iowa before coming to the University of Missouri-Rolla. During his 14 years here as a professor of Chemical Engineering [1964 - 1993], over 1000 of the department's approximately 3000 alumni graduated.

Early in September of 1963, Harvey announced that he was resigining at the close of the school year, 1964. He would be moving to Rolla, Missouri, where he had accepted a teaching and counseling position with the University of Missouri's Science and Technology Department.

During Harvey's tenure of office, several new buildings had been completed on the campus and there had been a decided growth in the attitudes and concerns for the faculty and students alike. Tensions at Graceland grew out of the questions concerned with the direction of the college and the policies that were being developed concerning them. Across America, young people were getting more involved and exerting more influence in their own education.

During Harvey's 14 years at the University of Missouri-Rolla as a professor of Chemical Engineering [1964 - 1993], over 1000 of the department's approximately 3000 alumni graduated. Harvey influenced students through avenues that reached beyond the classroom. He was the chemical engineering Freshmen Advisor, the Co-op Student Advisor, the Transfer Student Advisor, and Faculty Advisor to the Student Chapter of AIChE. In recognition of his devotion to UMR, Harvey was an Alumni Association Award recipient. He and his wife Ruth became members of OGS in 1992.

Harvey's professional affiliations included membership in Tau Beta Pi, Sigma Xi, AIChE, the American Society for Engineering Education, the American Chemical Society, and the Missouri Society of Professional Engineers. Harvey received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the Ohio State University in 1978, as well as the Outstanding Counselor Award from the American Institute of Chemical Engineers for dedicated service as advisor to the student chapter of AIChE, in 1972 and 1978.

Harvey's talents as an advisor also extended to his church where he held many positions of ministerial leadership over the years. The Harvey H. Grice Endowment Fund has been established for support of Chemical Engineering Department.

He retired as professor emirtus.

Harvey passed away on October 1,1993, in Rolla, Missouri. He was inducted into the MNSM/UMR Academy of Chemical Engineers posthumously in 1996.

Mrs. Martha "Ruth" (Lively) Grice was born July 18, 1917, and passed away on October 4, 2001. Harvey and Ruth were interred at Ozark Hills Memorial Gardens, Rolla, Missouri.
