Biography ~ Charlotte Rose (Darnell) Gould
Graceland University, Lamoni, Iowa

Charlotte Rose (Darnell) Gould was born in McClave, Colorado, on December 26, 1913, the daughter of Edward Paul and Ella M. (Ralston) Darnell. She became a Graceland innovator through a career of varied roles she held at the college.

Charlotte attended Graceland in 1934 where she met her future husband, William Steele "Bill" Gould. They were married on June 5, 1935 at Independence, Missouri.

Charlotte continued her education several years later, completing her B.S. from Columbia University Teachers College in 1950, and her M.S. Ed. from Northern Illinois University in 1959.

Charlotte became an activer writer for Herald House and first taught at Graceland for a semester in 1942, and then another term in 1943 while Tess Morgan was away on leave.

Before beginning broader roles in the classroom, Charlotte worked in President George N. Brigg's office, business manager N. Ray Carmichael's office, the registrar's office, and the alumni office. In January of 1947, she was asked to teach secretarial classes on a temporary basis following the death of Bertha Deskin. Charlotte continued this assignment full-time until the spring of 1957, when she shifted her teaching responsibilities to English and initiated several programs in that area. Charlotte was Graceland's first international student advisor and promoted the course in business and industry writing.

During the summer of 1960, the Goulds traveled to the Orient to learn about English teaching methods there; Bill wrote a recommendation to the RLDS Church that Graceland should be teaching English as a Seond Language, and Charlotte inititated the program for the college. She helped create an English language school in Japan during a 14-month period in 1971-72.

A decade after her husband's death, Charlotte retired in 1979 as professor emerita, but continued teaching for three an a half years on a part-time basis. She occasionally returned to the classroom at Graceland when needed, helming English as a Second Language for the last time in the fall of 1993 before moving to Coeur d' Alene, Idaho.

After moving to Idaho at the age of eighty, her life of service continued. She wrote Christian education and worship materials and taught classes on these subjects. She was on the Board of Directors of the Alzheimers Support Group, was active in Toastmasters, and tutored at-risk high school students.

Charlotte and Bill shared absolute dedication to the Community of Christ. They both served in the priesthood – Charlotte in the office of elder. They spent their lives in service to the church and Graceland University and thousands of students have benefited from their efforts.

Charlotte died on December 3, 2010, at Bonners Ferry, Idaho, aged 97 years. Her life was devoted to scholarship and service. She was interred at Rose Hill Cemetery, Lamoni, Iowa, beside her husband, Dr. William Steele Gould.
