BIOGRAPHY - DR. ROBERT B. FLANDERS
Graceland University, Lamoni, IowaRobert Flanders, is a member of what is now called the Community of Christ (formerly the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints) and was an Associate Professor of History at Graceland College (present-day Graceland University) from 1960 to 1966.
During the time he was on Graceland's faculty, the only college supported by the Community of Chirst, Flanders wrote Nauvoo: Kingdom on the Mississippi (University of Illinois Press). Flander's history of Nauvoo during the Mormon years is well written, factual and heart-warming. It also almost cost Flanders his membership in the Reorganized Church as his detailed research proved to him and so he wrote that polygamy was practiced in Nauvoo, including by its Prophet/President Joseph Smith, Jr., something the Reorganized Church (led by Smith's sons and descendants until fairly recently) had always denied.
Before retirement, Flanders taught history at Southwest Missouri State College at Springfield, and was the director of Center for Ozark Studies fro 1979 to 1985.
