BIOGRAPHY of DR. DAVID L. CLINEFELTER
Graceland University, Lamoni, Iowa

David L. Clinefelter was born on August 22, 1950, in Greenville, Pennsylvania.

David Clinefelter succeeded William T. "Bill" Higdon as the president of Graceland College [present-day Graceland University] on July 12, 1997. Clinefelter entered the presidency as the college embarked on the construction of a new nursing facility at its Independence, Missouri, campus.

Clinefelter earned his B.A. in English and elementary education from Graceland in 1972, graduating summa cum laude and earning the Gold Seal for leadership. He continued his education at Ohio State University, completing his M.A. in curriculum and instruction in 1976, and his Ph.D. in curriculum and teacher education in 1978.

Dr. Clinefelter began his teaching career at Mentor, Ohio, serving as an English and creative writing teacher and football and wrestling coach during the 1974-1976 school years. Before returning to Graceland, he also worked as an assistant professor at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (1978-79), a principal at Jonathan Alder Local Schools of Plain City, Ohio (1979-1982), and superintendent of Lamoni Community Schools (1982-1991). He joined Graceland's administration in 1991 as vice-presdient for academic affairs (until 1997) and dean of faculty, helping develop the college's partnership programs with North Central Missouri College, American Institute of Business, and Southwestern Community College. As dean, Dr. Clinefelter encouraged the use of instructional technology and distance learning methods. During the 1997-1997 school year, he participated in the American Council on Education's Fellows Program, learning about trends and practices in higher education through an internship at Northwest Missouri State University. Under Dr. Clinefelter's leadership, Graceland experienced a transition from a college into a university with the addition of graduate-level programs.

Dr. Clinefelter left Graceland in 2002. He joined Kaplan University as provost and vice-president of academic affairs, then in April of 2010 became chief academic officer of Walden University at Minneapolis, Minnesota.
