Biography ~ William J. Stout

(Lewis Publishing Company (1887)), p. 619:

WILLIAM J. STOUT, a farmer, residing on section 33, High Point Township, where he owns sixty-six and two thirds acres of land, was born in St. Louis, Missouri, September 22, 1816, son of GEORGE and PHEBE (RIGG) STOUT, natives of Tennessee and Ohio respectively. In 1818 they removed to Illinois, and in 1836 they came to Iowa, settling in what is now Jefferson County. WILLIAM came to Decatur County in 1854, and is settled one mile north of Leon, and operated it three years. He also owns a saw and grist-mill one half mile from Leon. He has seen the prairie fires burn over the ground where a portion of Leon now stands. Mr. STOUT was married in Jefferson County, in 1839, to LETITIA SEERS (sic), daughter of DANIEL and ELIZABETH MARTIN SEERS (sic), natives of Kentucky. She was born in Howard County, Missouri, in 1823. Their children are – SARAH, wife of T. MORRIS; ANNA, wife of WILLIAM MOORHEAD; JOHN A., DANIEL, and SUSAN, wife of HENRY SKINNER. Mr. and Mrs. TALLEYARD MORRIS have three children – FRED, PEARL and HUGH. Mr. and Mrs. WILLIAM MOORHEAD have five children - JESSIE J., MARY J., RHODA L., EVA and GRACIE S. WILLIE is deceased. JOHN A. married MARY MCKENAN, and their children are - EDITH M., JAMES M., HATHRUN, ROY and ORREY. WILLIAM is deceased. DANIEL married MARY SKINNER, and they have three children – ESTELLA, LEONARD R., and HELLEN. ALLIE, wife of MARSHALL SKINNER, has two children - WILLIAM and OREN H. Himself and wife are members of the Brethren church, sometimes called Dunkards, of which he is an elder. One of their daughters came near losing her sight a few years ago. After expending a good deal of time and money in the effort to restore her eyes he found a remedy with which he succeeded in entirely curing them. He has since cured a great many very bad cases where physicians have failed, which makes him a very useful man in the neighborhood.

NOTE: William J. Stout died January 23, 1898. Letitia Ann (Sears) Stout was born on February 11, 1823, and died December 23, 1908. Interments were at Franklin Cemetery. Also interred at Franklin Cemetery is Frank C. Stout, born December 19, 1863, and died February 3, 1866.

Interred at High Point Cemetery is William J. Stout, born in 1876 the son of J.A. and M.A. Stout, died October 27, 1882. Interred at Leon Cemetery are John Alvin Stout, born 1852, died 1929, Leon IA; and Mary Ann (McKenan) Stout, born February 2, 1852, Gurensey Co. OH, died April 1, 1931, Leon IA.
