(Lewis Publishing Company (1887)), Pp. 625-26:N. C. SPENCER, farmer and stock-raiser in Long Creek Township, resides on section 14, where he owns 124 acres of land. He was born in Herkimer County, New York, in 1821, son of RUSSELL and PENELOPE (PHELPS) SPENCER, natives of Connecticut, who removed to New York, and lived there until their death. Mr. SPENCER was reared in New York. His early life was spent on the farm, and he afterward followed the Erie Canal twelve summers. He came to Decatur County in 1865. He was married in Madison County, New York, in 1850, to ADALINE WEST, also a native of New York. She died in 1862, and in 1865 he was married in this county to LUCINDA EASON, born in Ohio, in 1826 (sic). They have one child – IRENE A. Mr. SPENCER has several as justice of the peace and held other minor offices. He is at present serving as township trustee. He enlisted in 1861, in Company F, Eighty-first New York Infantry, and served [with the rank of Sergeant] three years [1861 - 1863], but was engaged in no regular battles. Mr. SPENCER’S postoffice address is Van Wert.
NOTE: Newton Spencer was born January 23, 1816 (according to his gravestone) and died August 9, 1890. Adell Lucinda (Eason) Spencer was born September 15, 1820, and died April 23, 1902. Also interred at Van Wert Cemetery are Franklin P. Spencer, born October 9, 1852, died July 27, 1859; Infant Daughter of Newton and L. J. Spencer, born February 13, 1860, and died February 18, 1860.
