E. MITCHELL, son of Enos and Harriet N. (Chaffin) Mitchell, natives of Virginia, was born in Keokuk, Iowa, December 19, 1853. His parents died before he was twelve years of age, and until attaining his majority he worked on a farm, attending school during the winter. He taught several terms of school to increase his financial resources, and, finally determining to make the profession of medicine his lifework, in 1875, he began studying with Dr. J. N. Holland, of Smyrna, Clarke County, Iowa, continuing under his preceptorship three years. He subsequently attended and graduated from the Keokuk College of Physicians and Suregons, and after his graduation located in Clarke County, where he lived about a year, when he moved to Weldon, Decatur County, where he has built up a large and lucrative practice. He has been a succesful practitioner, taking an interest in his profession, and by study and consultation with his older brethren in the profession, has gained an enviable reputation, being recognized as one of the rising young physicians of the county. Dr. Mitchell was married October 16, 1879, to Miss Emma Hogue, daughter of William and Lucinda Hogue, of Clarke County. They have one son - Clairemont H. Dr. and Mrs. Mitchell are members of the Methodist Episcopal church.

NOTE: In another biography, it was stated that Dr. Mitchell started a medical practice in Garden Grove, 1879, upon his graduation from the Keokuk College, and moved to Weldon around the year 1885.

Emma (Hogue) Mitchell was a registered pharmacist and owned and operated a drug store in Weldon from 1887 to 1907. Dr. Mitchell's office was located next door to the drug store, west side of Main Street.
Dr. Mitchel and his son, Dr. Clairemont H. Mitchell, helped secure the first hospital in Leon IA.

Dr. and Mrs. Mitchell moved to Grand River where Dr. Mitchell continued his medical practice [1919 - 1939] and served as mayor for thirteen years.

Emma (Hogue) Mitchell was born in Ohio in February of 1856, and died in 1934, Grand River IA. After Emma's death Dr. Mitchell moved to a farm near Primghar IA, to live with his daughter Ena and her family until his death at the age of 86 years on December 9, 1940. Dr. and Mrs. Mitchell were interred at Grand River Cemetery, Grand River IA.

Dr. Clairemont Hogue Mitchell, son of Dr. Enos H. and Emma (Hogue) Mitchell, was born July 25, 1882; practiced medicine with a specialty as an obstetrician from 1910 to 1928 in Leon IA; served with the U.S. Army during World War I in France; died July 1, 1970, Cincinnati, Appanoose Co. IA. His wife, Bella Rhoda Hinman, was born in 1883, Marshall WI. They were interred at Indianola IA. Their daughter, Rowena (Mitchell) Haselhoff, was born in Leon IA on November 6, 1915, and died September 7, 2005, Bloomfield IA; her body donated to medical science with the University of Iowa Department of Anatomy.

Ena L. (Mitchell) Birlingmair, daughter of Dr. Enos H. and Emma (Hogue) Mitchell, was born in Decatur Co. IA on September 22, 1893, and died at Cincinnati, Appanoose Co. IA in December of 1983. Ena taught school and was the high school principal at Grand River for the 1916-17 school term. Besides her teaching duties, Ena accompanied the school's team to nearby towns, utilizing the trains which ran daily at that time. She married Robert Birlingmair (1891 - 1967) of Weldon in 1917, and the couple farmed land in South Dakota which was owned by Ena's mother and aunt Viola Hogue. Ena returned to Grand River for the birth of her two sons, both delivered by her father, Dr. Mitchell.
