(PLOUGHE, Sheridan. B.F. Bowen & Co. (1917)), Vol. II.JOHN MILLER was raised on a farm and was married in New York state. They later moving to Indiana where he developed a farm, but there was a problem with the title to the farm and he was removed on a legal technicality.
They moved farther west and settled in Illinois, where be remained until 1846. About that time the Black Hawk War broke out and he served in that briefly.
In the summer of 1846 he and his family drove by ox-team to Iowa and settled in Wapello county [Iowa]. There John Miller got a half section of "Congress land," on which he lived until 1855 when he sold out and moved to Decatur county, [Iowa] where he bought a quarter of a section of land and there spent the remainder of his life, his death in the spring of 1874, at the age of seventy-four years.
His widow Sophia survived him for nearly eighteen years, her death occurring in February, 1892, at the age of eighty-one. They were the parents of nine children, three sons and six daughters.
NOTE: John Miller was born January 31, 1800, and died March 23, 1874. Sophia (Walworth) Miller was born in Canada on August 23, 1811, and died March 25, 1893. They were interred at Franklin Cemetery, Center Township, Decatur County IA. Of John and Sophia's children:
