Biography ~ Josiah Robinson McClelland

JOSIAH ROBINSON McCLELLAND, the oldest physician of Decatur County, is a native of Monroe County, Kentucky, born December 15, 1823. In 1848 he began the study of medicine with Dr. J. B. Bell, now of Kansas City, Missouri, and remained with him until the summer of 1852, the last year being associated with him in practice. He the practiced alone a year, and in the spring of 1853 located in Decatur County, Iowa. He was the first practicing physician in the county, and his friends among the pioneers are legion. He was married in Mercer County, Missouri, March 18, 1851, to Amanda M. Rhea, a native of Tennessee. They have three children - Ettie May, wife of J[oshua]. P. Hall, Edgar Bell, and Emma G.

NOTE: Dr. McClelland died on December 24, 1893, Leon IA. Amanda M. (Rhea) McClelland was born July 16, 1829, Roane Co. TN, and died May 12, 1910, Leon IA. Ella May (McClelland) Hall was born in November of 1858, and died in Denver CO on Nov. 11, 1914. Edgar B. McClelland was born August 19, 1860, and died in Leon IA on August 3, 1908. Emma G. (McClelland) Clark, wife of Willard P. Clark, was born November 20, 1863, and died April 10, 1924, Elgin IL. They were interred at Leon Cemetery, Leon IA.
