JAMES HITCHCOCK, farmer and stock-raiser, resides on section 27, High Point Township, where he owns 174 acres of land in a good state of cultivation, with good buildings. He was born in Harrison County, Ohio, in 1812, son of ISACC and MARY (HOUSEFIELD) HITCHCOCK, natives of Pennsylvania, the former of English and the latter of Irish decent. JAMES was reared a farmer, and on coming to Iowa took up the nursery business. He came to Decatur County in 1859. He was first married in Ohio, in 1835, to MILLIE FARRELL, who was born in Richland County, Ohio, and died in 1856. They were the parents of ten children – MARY, wife of J. B. MCLEARY, of Decatur County; JAMES F., and ISACC, of Kansas; WILLIAM H., of Washington territory; JOHN F., a nurseryman at High Point; MELISSA, wife of M. V. MCLEARY, of Decatur County; HORACE A. of Wyoming; ANN wife of ROY BOWEN, of Grand Island, Nebraska; JANE, a widow and DEXTER W. Mr. HITCHCOCK was again married, in 1865, in this county to Mrs. ESTHER STILES, widow of the late DANIEL STILES, who died in the army. They are the parents of four children – ELLA, ADA, ADDIE, and EDMUND. DELLA died in infancy. Mr. HITCHCOCK is a self-made man, but by energy, perseverance, economy and industry he has acquired a sufficient competency to keep the “wolf” from the door in old age. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity. He has five sons who served in the United States army during the late rebellion. Post-office, High Point.
