(Lewis Publishing Company (1887)), p. 485:

JOEL C. HIGBEE, was born in Shelburne, Chittenden County, Vermont, March 6, 1792. His father, ELNATHAN HIGBEE, was a soldier in the Revolutionary war, and settled in Vermont soon after the close of the war. J. C. HIBEE was married to JERUSHA LOCKWOOD of Shelburne, in 1820. In 1857, they with their children, came to Iowa, and settled in Bloomington Township, Decatur County. In September of the following year the mother died, and was buried near the home, a place she had chosen as her last resting place. In July, 1861, the youngest son, EDMUND, enlisted in the Fourth Iowa Infantry. He participated in several important battles, was at the siege of Vicksburg, Missionary Ridge, Lookout Mountain and was killed at the battle of Kenesaw Mountain, in June, 1864. He was a brave soldier, and met a soldier’s death. In 1865 Mr. HIGBEE moved to Center Township, where he resided until his death, December 1, 1876. Of his family, two sons and three daughters survive him. He was an upright, honorable citizen, and greatly respected in the community in which he lived.
