JOHN H. HANSEN, M. D., one of Decatur County’s physicians, and senior member of the firm of Hansen, Weld & Co., druggists, and also of the firm of Walker & Hansen, editors and publishers of the Lamoni Gazette, is a native of Denmark, born June 14, 1847. In 1857, his parents, HANS and MARIA HANSEN, came with their family to America, hoping to better their fortunes. After landing in this country they proceeded directly to Pottawatiomie County, Iowa, making their home ten miles east of Council Bluffs, where one child, TENNA, died in 1857, aged one year. The names of their children who are yet living are – FREDERICK, living in Shelby County, Iowa; Dr. JOHN H., our subject, the second child; MARY, wife of P. H. WIND, of Council Bluffs; OLIVER, now a resident of Oregon; SARAH, wife of JOHN CARLISLE, of Pottawatomie County; KENNEDY H., engaged in teaching school in the State of Oregon, and CARRIE and JULIETTE , still at home, all but the last three being born in Denmark. The family are all members of the Reorganized Church of the Latter-Day Saints, but in former years the father was a Baptist clergyman. Doctor HANSEN has seen much of life in America . In 1863-64 he was on the Platte River, and in 1865 was with General CONNER’s expedition, in the campaign against the Sioux Indians. He was in the Government employ in the transportation department. He spent the year 1866 in Utah, Montana and Idaho, part of the time prospecting for gold, and in the summer of 1867 was in the Black Hills. He spent the following winter with his father’s family in Iowa, making his home with them till 1872, working on the home farm, teaching school, and attending the high school at Council Bluffs. In the fall of 1873 he went South, spending most of his time in Kentucky, but visited Tennessee, Alabama and Florida. July 4, 1876, he was married to Miss ANNE E. TURNBOW , who was born September 8, 1853, in Farmington, Kentucky, a daughter of JEFFERSON and RACHEL TURNBOW. Her mother is deceased. Her father now lives at Fulton, Kentucky. While in Kentucky the doctor attended the Linnville High School one term, and the Farmington Institute one year, where he completed his literary education. In the fall of 1880 he visited his old home in Iowa, where he taught school for two terms. In 1881 he entered College of Physicians and Surgeons, at Keokuk, Iowa, where he was a closet student. In 1883 he graduated from the Kentucky School of Medicine, at Louisville, having made operative surgery a special study, and passing through a classical course. As before stated the doctor established his residence at Lamoni in 1884. He is a gentleman of fine literary attainments, and in his medical profession he is winning his way to a lucrative practice. When Lamoni was organized under a city charter he was made its mayor, but declined a re-election to the same office. Doctor and Mrs. HANSEN are the parents of four children - ZENOBIA M., AUDENTIA E., HORTENSE B. and FREDERICK J.
