(Lewis Publishing Company (1887)), pp. 691-92:PETER CRUIKSHANK, resided on section 28, Eden Township, where he settled in 1873. He has about 260 acres of land, only about twenty of which had been broken when he purchased it. A small log cabin has been built; all other improvements have been made by Mr. CRUIKSHANK. He was born in the Lowlands of Scotland, August 26, 1843. His father, JAMES CCRUIKSHANK, died when PETER was a small child, and he was reared by his paternal grandfather, with whom he came to America, in 1851. The family settled in Boone County, Missouri, and two years later came to Decatur County. Soon after the breaking out of the Rebellion PETER enlisted the Third Missouri Cavalry, and one year later was transferred to the Seventh Cavalry. Here he served until the close of the war, being constantly in active service. He was engaged in all the battles in which his regiment took part, Springfield, Independence and Lone Jack, in Missouri, and many others. He received injuries while in the army from which he will never recover. Since the war he has been engaged in farming. In 1873 he married MARILLA LINTON, a daughter of LENDER and JULIA A. LINTON, early settlers of this county. Mr. LINTON enlisted in the Fifth Kansas, and died in the service at Little Rock, Arkansas, in July, 1862. The mother is still living. Mr. and Mrs. CRUIKSHANS have three children – WALTER L., JULIETTE and EMMA. One died in infancy. Mrs. CRUIKSHANK’s family were natives of Indiana, and came to this country in 1856. She was born in Indiana, June 30, 1850.
