Biography ~ Theron Westervelt

THERON WESTERVELT, farmer, owns 480 acres of good farm land in Richland Township, and resides in Westerville. He was born in Dutchess County, New York, in 1823, son of Cornelius and Frances Westervelt. He remained in his native State until 1849. He came to Decatur County in 1853, where he has since resided. He was married in 1850, in Franklin, Ohio, to Angeline Westervelt, born in that county in 1830, daughter of Peter and Hannah Westervelt, natives of Ohio, and of English descent. Mr. and Mrs. Westervelt have had six children, two of whom are living -- Wilemina and Peter. Mr. Westervelt built the mill at Westerville, now owned by Mr. Roberts. The postoffice was established at that point in 1854 and he was the first postmaster, an office he held fifteen years. He named the postoffice. The town of Westerville was laid out in 1854 by one Mr. Henshaw and was formerly called Milford. Mr. Westervelt is a self-made man, and one of the old and honored pioneers of Decatur County.
