SAMSON HINES resides on section 4, Morgan Township. He owns ninety acres, forty of which are on section 33, Woodland Township. He purchased and located here in the fall of 1865. But very little improvement had been made. A log cabin had been built, which Mr. Hines repaired and occupied until he built his present residence. Mr. Hines was born in Beaver County, Pennsylvania, in 1825. He was reared and married in Pennsylvania, and removed to Gallia County, Ohio, in 1856, where he settled upon a farm. Previous to his enlistment in the war of the Rebellion, he took part in repelling the Morgan raid in Ohio, and afterward had charge of a train of army supplies in West Virginia.

In August, 1864, he enlisted in Comapny D, One Hundred and Seventy-ninth Ohio Infantry, and served until the close of the war. When the company was organized he was made Orderly Sergeant, and served in that capacity until discharged. His regiment was assigned to the Twentieth Army Corps, but did not reach Atlanta in time to join Sherman in his march to the sea, and consequently joined General Thomas at Nashville and participated in the battles with Hood. He remained at Nashville until the close of the war.

Mr. Hines has been twice married. His first wife Was Elizabeth Humes, whom he married in Pennsylvania. She died in Ohio, previous to the war, leaving two children - Mary Emma, wife of J. R. Evans, of Wayne County, and David F., of Woodland Township, Decatur County. For his second wife, Mr. Hines married Julia Ratkin, and they have four children - William M., John H., Sarah and George J. Politically Mr. Hines is a Democrat.
