Dr. Barney C. Parker
Graceland University, Lamoni, IowaDr. Barney C. PARKER attended Graceland College from 1952-1953 and 1956-1958 interrupted by military service during the Korean War.
Dr. PARKER was a starting two-way lineman earning accolades for his stellar play. As a member of the 1952 and 1953 Interstate Football Conference Champions, Dr. PARKER was named to the All-Conference Team in both season and in 1953 was named to the Junior College All-American Team. Upon his discharge from the U.S. Army, Dr. PARKER returned to Graceland in the spring of 1956 to complete his AA degree.
With his wife, Phyllis and sons, David and Mark, he gave up a scholarship to the University of Kansas and retuned to Graceland, which had become a four-year institution.
In 1957, Dr. PARKER was elected co-captain and earned NAIA All-American Honorable Mention. He also captained Graceland's Tennis Team ands was the 1956 Junior College Interstate Conference Singles runner-up and 1958 Graceland Relay Singles and Doubles Champion.
Dr. Barney PARKER has continued his success off the field. Earning his Masters in Education and Education Doctorate in administration from the University of Missouri, he has been identified among the top 100 educators in the nation for the years 1987, 1990 and 1993 and was Idaho Superintendent of the Year in 1900.
In 1994, Dr. PARKER was presented the Graceland College Alumni Association Distinguished Service Award.
Dr. Barney C. PARKER was inducted into Graceland University's Hall of Fame in 1998.

1933 ~ 2012Dr. Barney C. PARKER passed away on Sunday, October 14, 2012, from a long struggle with prostate cancer. He was born in San Antonio, Texas, on June 3, 1933, to Alaska Nell JONES and Frank BENHAM. Alaska married Gary HOLLIMAN who passed away after a short illness. Alaska then married John S. PARKER who became his devoted father until his death in 1976.
Dr. PARKER is survived by his loving wife, Phyllis of 59 years, and sons David (wife Shelly), Mark (wife Marianne) and grandchildren Cortney, Tyler, D.J., Jace, Breanna, and Peyton.
He was preceded in death by his daughter Jane PARKER, his parents, his brother, and numerous cousins.
Dr. PARKER served in the field of education for 39 years as a classroom teacher, a principal, a college dean and as a public school superintendent of schools. For 18 years until his retirement he served as Superintendent of the Boise, Idaho School District, a tenure surpassing all previous superintendents.
Dr. PARKER truly loved Boise and those he had the privilege to serve for 18 years.
Dr. PARKER was nationally recognized as an outstanding educator and was recognized for numerous awards such as "Idaho Superintendent of the Year" in 1990, one of North America's Top 100 Educators, and a Finalist for National Superintendent of the Year in 1990.
He served as President of the Board of Directors of the Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory in Portland, Oregon, and served on national committees for the Department of Education. Dr. PARKER is well known for his support of quality education and his philosophy "what children learn and what they become depend largely upon how they feel about themselves. He was a strong advocate of classroom teachers and preferred to be recognized as a teacher first and a superintendent second.
Dr. PARKER attended Graceland College in Lamoni, Iowa, prior to and after his service in the United States Army (1954-56). At Graceland he served as vice-president of the student body and co-captain of the college football team and served as captain of the college tennis team. He received a Baccalaureate degree in Liberal Arts from Graceland in June 1958 and teacher certification from Northwest Missouri State College, Maryville, Missouri, in the summer of 1958. He earned a Masters of Education (1963) and Doctorate of Education (1975) in educational administration from the University of Missouri-Columbia.
Dr. PARKER was inducted into the Graceland College Hall of Fame in 1998 and received the Graceland College Alumni Distinguished Service Award in 1994. He was awarded the Citation of Merit in Education by the Alumni Association of the University of Missouri in 1991.
Although Dr. PARKER was committed to his work, his true passion was for his family. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He enjoyed encouraging and motivating his children and grandchildren whether on the tennis courts, in the classroom or in the pursuit of their dreams. One of the most importance lessons he instilled in his children and grandchildren was the importance of family.
In their retirement years, Dr. PARKER and his wife Phyllis wintered in Palm Springs, California and enjoyed playing tennis and developing close friendships. Dr. PARKER will be loved and missed by many.
There will be a private service in Boise on Thursday, October 18th.
