Militia of 1880-1882 Salt Creek

I have an old letter from a distant relative that said my GGGrandfather Orestes J (OJ) Simpson, of Salt Creek, Davis Co., Iowa, was shot while in the Militia looking for bandits in 1882. He later died March 1882 of his injuries.

How do I get a list of the Militia for that time, and does anyone have any information on OJ and his wife Mary Jane (Greer)Simpson, who had died in Jan 1882 leaving their 5 children to be raised by OJ's sister Sarah (Simpson) Parker.
