The funeral of Newton S. Johnson, who died Saturday evening, will be held Wednesday afternoon at 1 o'clock

The body, surrounded by a guard of honor, will lie in state at the church, Wednesday from 10 a. m. until the funeral services. The deceased was born October 4, 1843, in Milwaukee County, Wis. He received his education at the Milwaukee academy and at the Beloit, Wis., college. He enlisted in Co. B., First Wisconsin infantry, May 17, 1861 after reenlisting in Co, E., First Wisconsin cavalry. He was honorably discharged for disability in 1863. After a short rest, Mr. Johnson settled in Raleigh, Ill., where he went into business and where he was appointed postmaster, He came to Bloomfield in 1864, but in 1868 went to Keokuk where he remained for a few years. Later he returned to Bloomfield and went into the grocery business, in which he retained his interest until a week ago, when, realizing that the disease with which he was afflicted would end fatally, he sold out to his two sons, Edgar and Walter. Johnson & Sons was the oldest grocery house in the county. Mr. Johnson was twice married. His first wife was Miss Galena Jones of Springfield, Mo., to whom he was married September 27, 1867. To this union five children were born: Edgar B. of Bloomfield Mrs. Chas. Hazelwood, of Hamilton, Mont. Mrs. Carrie Oppenheimer, Buffalo Mrs. Homer Wahl, Moulton, and Walter of Bloomfield. Mrs. Johnson died July 8, 1884. In September, 1889, Mr. Johnson married Mrs. Ada Sweringen, a widow, with two daughters and one son. He adopted these children and to them he was always a kind father. These children are Mrs. James McGowan, Bloomfield Mrs. A. V Benson, Loveland, Col., and Arthur Johnson of Ft. Scott, Kas. Mr. Johnson was a member of the G. A. R., Knights of Pythias, and a thirty-third degree Mason, besides being a Shriner, member of the Elks and I. O. O. P. lodges. He was a past grand patriarch and grand representative, as well as being a trustee of the Odd Fellows Orphans home at Mason City. In the death of Mr. Johnson Davis County loses one of her best citizens, a man whom all respected. Last summer he was nominated at the republican primary for state representative, but before the election was compelled to decline the honor because of illness. Early in the winter he went to San Antonio, hoping to regain his health, but failing, he returned home to lie among his loved ones and old friends.
