George C. Duke Is Dead At 76
Had Resided In Ottumwa 35 Years, Retiring From I. S. U. Services George Curtis Duke, 76, died at his home, 1104 Tuttle St., at 7:45 AM Sunday.
He was born February 8, 1861, in Mahaska County. His early life was spent Drakesville and Bloomfield, the last 35 years he had lived in Ottumwa. He held several official positions in Bloomfield including that of postmaster. An Iowa Southern Utilities employee, a streetcar motorman for years and later a bus driver, he retired about seven years ago. Mr. Duke was a member the First Christian church at Drakesville. Surviving are his wife, Jennie; one son, Guy Duke of Kahoka, Missouri; two daughters, Mrs. Mabel Bemis, Drakesville, and Mrs. Blanche Schultz, Bloomington, Illinois, and three stepchildren, Miss Dorothy Broiche of Chicago, Illinois Harold Broiche Chicago, and Mrs. Helen Torrence, Ottumwa. The body is at the Carroll Reese funeral Chapel, where services will be held Tuesday at 10 AM, in charge of the Rev. Earl Daniels, pastor of the First Christian church. Burial will be made in Drakesville cemetery. Employees of the I. S. U. will be pallbearers.
