Herbert B. Carroll Dies at Lost Nation

Funeral services for Herbert B. Carroll were held Sunday afternoon at two o'clock at the Wagler funeral home in Bloomfield, with Rev. Warren B. Keller, pastor of the Free Methodist church of Ottumwa in charge. Burial was in Bloomfield cemetery.

The son of John and Alice Carroll, he was born in Van Buren county June 12, 1881. He taught in the rural and town schools, was manager of a lumber yard at Clarinda, was in the hardware business with his cousin, Wilbur Carroll at Milton and Pulaski, was manager of the lumber yard at Keosauqua when he was elected county superintendent of schools of Van Buren county.

He bought of the Arthur Mounce estate a half interest in the Keosauqua Republican and was associated with R.B. Rowley in the publication of this paper until he bought the Rowley interest.

While he was editor and publisher of the Republican he was elected state representative of Van Buren county in the Iowa legislature. About six years ago he sold the Republican to A.G. Roberts, since which time he has been employed by the O'Hara hardware store in Ottumwa, also was manager of a lumber yard in Illinois and at the time of his death was operating a lumber business at Lost Nation, Iowa. He was a member of the Free Methodist church of Cedar Rapids.

On August 12, 1914, he was united in marriage with Miss Bess Dundore of Perry, Iowa, who survives. Also surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Pauline Shepp of Mt. Pleasant; two sisters, Mrs. D.C. Nicklin of Selma, and Mrs. Ira Lasley of Ottumwa.

He died Friday morning, Jan. 18, at his home in Lost Nation after an illness of several months.
