Mother, George and wife, Louisa, myself and wife [and Columbus]-
All profess to be folloers of that meek and lowly son of God; the name we choose to wear is Christian. My dear friends we have abundantly bestowd our path we live in an excellent neighborhood famous for its Christianity and morality for eating and drinking we have no lack. My crop of wheat was about 300 bushel my corn upwards of 400 my pork near two thousand butter and cheese a plenty to spare. I do not speak in this manner with the intention to boast far be it from me but such is the true state of the case and I do feel thankful to the Lord the giver of those temporal blessings as well as spiritual, We have six children three girls and three boys their name and birth as follows, Jane 1830-Mary 1832-Hiram 1834- Salvina 1836-George 1838 Wm H Harrison 1841 March 4th. Sold my place that I had about 2 miles from here six years ago with the intent of moving to the new country but my friends would not suffer it to be so. I then bought 104 acres where I now live the land was new and but little improved. I have built me a good barn but our house is a poor cold log house. I have got lumber and mean to build next season the distintions is 38 feet by 18 two story high with a kitchen 18 by 16 to form an ell. My stock is as follows, 3 horses, one Durham Bull weight 22 hundred 6 cows including all 27 head. I have 45 Sheep, so no more on this subject- Our money matters have become verry much deranged, in this State our taxes high and money as scarce as I ever knew it, although I have wheat, corn, potatoes and pork to sell it will fetch but little cash. Shal I tel you the prices, pork is 1.50 per hundred the best quality two dollars in store goods wheat .40 cts. Corn 18 3/4cts potatoes 15 cts. Cheese 5 to 6 cts. Butter the same oats 12 ½ to 10 and but little money even at these low rates.
When I look back on my youthful days and see my Fathers family in bloom of health, cheerful and brisk the next thought is where are they now!! Scattered to the four winds Lorenzo I have not seen for 14 years J Gilbert 13 and George but once in 13 years;; My sheet is small and for want of room I must conclude if I am never to see you in the flesh again put your whole trust in that Being who has created us all that we may meet in that world of perfect bliss at Gods right hand {Hiram Pagett}
