Eugene (Gene) R. Sturtz of Waukee passed away Sunday October 30, 2011 after a long courageous battle with cancer. He was born February 15, 1945 in Boone, Iowa to LaVerne and Lillian Sturtz. Gene was a graduate of Grand Community School and Simpson College where he was a member of Delta Upsilon Fraternity. He was a baseball and basketball stand-out in high school, and he continued to compete at the college level.
He was united in marriage on August 15, 1965 to his high school sweetheart, Sonja Stark in Boxholm, Iowa. His passion was teaching and coaching, which he did for 33 years. The last 29 years being with the Perry Community Schools. He enjoyed basketball, golf, and sharing his skill with others. Gene was a loving and devoted father and grandfather.
Preceding him in death were his daughter, Meredith and father, LaVerne. He leaves behind his wife of 46 years, his daughter Nicole (Dominic) Tornabane, and grandchildren, Maddy and Noah of Waukee; mother Lillian Sturtz of Fort Dodge; brother Roger (Jackie) Sturtz of Humboldt, Keith of Fort Dodge; sister, Betty (Bud) Miller of Boone, and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Wednesday, November 2, 2011 from 1 to 8 p.m. with family present from 4 to 7 p.m. at Carris Family Funeral Home. A private family graveside will be held at a later date in the Lawn Cemetery by Boxholm, IA. In lieu of flowers memorials will be given to family and may be left at the Funeral Home.
