John T. Schmitz, Sr.

John Tuohey Schmitz, Sr., passed from this life on Friday, February 3, 2012, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, February 7, at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Urbandale. Committal services will take place at 12:30 p.m. at Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Adel.

John was born February 26, 1928 in Purcell, Kansas to Ferdinand and Matilda Tuohey Schmitz. He married Dorothy Marie Hagel in 1957 in Atchison, KS. He was the father of ten children: Colette (Mike) Gapsky of Allison Park, PA, Celeste (Tony) Consbruck of Grove City, PA, John T., Jr. (Erin) Schmitz of Kettering, OH, Randy (Theresa) Schmitz of North Wales, PA, Elizabeth (Chris) Klinvex of Apison, TN, Paul (Pamela) Schmitz of Huntersville, NC, Meg (Ron) Anderson and Joanne (Dave) Beall both of Clive, Jim (Kara) Schmitz of Hendersonville, TN and David (Teresa) Schmitz of Des Moines.

John was in the U.S. Air Force from 1946-1949. John retired from General Motors in 1983 after 27 years, working in Kansas City, New York City, New Jersey, Pittsburgh and Des Moines GMC Truck Centers. Following retirement, he was the Secretary Treasurer for Quality Ford in West Des Moines, retiring in 1993. John enjoyed playing cards and time with his family, especially doting on his 26 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

In addition to his wife, Dorothy, and children, he is survived by one sister, Patrice Hall of Olathe, KS; three sisters-in-law, Marge Schmitz of Marietta, GA, LaVerne Carbajo of Olathe, KS and Joanne Gerety of Kansas City, KS; two brothers-in-law Gene (Helen) Hagel of Kansas City, KS and John Hagel of Gladstone, MO; and numerous nieces and nephews.

His parents; brothers, Bernard and Ferdinand Schmitz; and sisters, Mary Ann Nikolai, Margaret Carr and Elizabeth Sirridge preceded him in death.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday, February 6, 2012 at Iles Funeral Homes, Westover Chapel in Des Moines, where a vigil service will begin at 7 p.m.

The family has respectfully requested that memorial contributions be made to St. Pius X Catholic Church. ~ The Des Moines (IA) Register 06 Feb 2012.
