Mrs. Mabel D. Crane, one of the older residents of Winterset, died last Saturday, August 2, 1965, at the Madison County Memorial Hospital, after a three week illness, at the age of 98 years. She had been a Winterset resident for the past 25 years.

Mrs. Crane was a daughter of Richard N. Dean and Harriet Quick and was born at Griswold, Iowa January 13, 1877. The family moved to Van Meter and she was graduated from the first senior class of the Van Meter High School. She then attended Leander Clarke College in Toledo, Iowa for two years. She was married to George A. Crane December 24, 1894, and they established their home in Dexter, where they resided for many years. They were the parents of two children, Cmdr. George R. Crane, who died March 21, 1971, and Mrs. Hugh (Mary) Ilgenfritz of Winterset.

While in Dexter Mr. Crane served as a newspaper publisher and as post master. He died December 13, 1938, and his wife, Mabel, was appointed to succeed him in January, 1939, holding that position until 1946. Mrs. Crane and her son George moved to Winterset in 1956, when he began working for the Winterset Madisonian, until his death in March, 1971.

Mrs. Crane was a member of the Presbyterian Church, the American Legion Auxiliary and the Madison County Antique Association.

She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Ilgenfritz, with whom she has resided for several years, 2 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and 2 great great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mrs. Crane were conducted by the Rev. Alan Parker at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 5, at Collins Funeral Home, with burial in the Dexter cemetery.
