Carroll Howard Cushman was born Nov. 16, 1917 to Hayden Burwell and Flossie P. Atherton in Dexter, Iowa. He graduated from Dexter High School in 1936.

He married Arlene Orton in 1940 and farmed near Dallas Center. In 1942 they moved to Hastings, Neb. to work in an ammunition plant. In 1945 he was drafted into the Seabees, so his family returned to Dexter during his absence.

He worked at the Redfield Brick and Tile Company and became a brick layer and cement man. He worked at Happy Acres and made many beautiful fireplaces in the vicinity.

In 1966 Arlene died of a heart attack.

In 1967 he was united in marriage to his friend and classmate Kate Ross.

Carroll was an avid fisherman and hunter, and also enjoyed gardening. He was a fireman and served as fire chief four times.

Survivors include his wife Kate of Stuart; sons Charles of Ankeny and Kenneth of Scottsdale, Ariz.; five grandchildren; brother Max of McHenry, Ill.; sister Dorothy Woltman of Bella Vista, Ark. and Susan Young of Storm Lake.

Graveside memorial services were held April 8, 1996 at Dexter Community Cemetery, Dexter, with Rev. Donald Carlson officiating.
