Effie A. Gorby, daughter of Benjamin and Mary Gorby, was born in Meigs County, Ohio, January 15, 1862, and passed away at her late home southwest of Dexter, Iowa, Jan. 26, 1940, aged 78 years and 11 days.

When quite young she united with the Christian church and continued in this faith as long as she lived. She loved to listen to the religious services and the good old fashioned hymns and looked forward every Sunday evening to hear Rev. Fuller over the radio.

Jan. 5, 1882, she was united in marriage with John Emmet Johnston. To this union were born four children, three sons and one daughter, Glen of Pella, Chas. of Dexter, Earl and Mabel at home. In 1884 they moved to Nodaway County, Mo., where they lived for 7 years and then moved to Howard County, Nebr., where they resided for one year. They came to Dallas county, Iowa, in a covered wagon in the fall of 1893 and lived in the Stuart and Dexter communities ever since. She was a kind and thoughtful mother, a devoted wife and a real friend to all who knew her and will be greatly missed. For the last few years she had been in failing health and was bedfast for the last three weeks of her life. She bore her suffering without a murmur or complaint. Her daughter, Mabel, ministered kindly to her during this long siege of sickness.

Besides her children there are 15 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren, one sister, Lewie Thorpe, of California, with a host of other relatives and friends who mourn her passing. Jan. 3, 1937, she was bereft of her husband, she bore her sorrow with great fortitude. In her closing moments she said to her dear ones, “I am tired. I want to go home” and then saying as her last message, “I am going home.”

Funeral from Methodist church last Sunday at 2 pm., conducted by Rev. J. H. Freedline. Interment in the Dexter cemetery.
