Mrs. Vance, mother of Mrs. G. W. Harvey, who has resided with her daughter many years, passed away Sunday morning, April 26, 1914, at the age of 83 years and 3 months, after a long illness.

Eliza Jane Arbuckle was born in Carrollton, Ohio, January 26, 1831, and was married to Dr. A. W. Vance May 20, 1856. They came to Iowa in 1869 and located at Dexter in 1870. Dr. Vance died in 1889 and of the immediate family one daughter, Mrs. Nora Harvey, who resides north of Stuart, and a son, D. J. Vance of Des Moines, are left to morn the loss of a loving mother. For several years Mrs. Vance had been dependent upon others, for she had lost her eyesight. She was whole-hearted, congenial and her friends many. She was very fond of company and in later years when she was unable to meet people on different social occasions and in their homes, she looked forward to their coming with much pleasure.

Mrs. Vance was a devout member of the Presbyterian church of Dexter, being one of the charter members. A few days before her death she sang “Nearer My God to Thee.” She often found great consolation in the 23rd Psalm.

The funeral was held at the Presbyterian church in Dexter, Tuesday, April 28, conducted by her pastor, Rev. H. O. Bethel, and assisted by Rev. Mrs. Menegh. Interment was made in the Dexter cemetery beside her husband.
