Joel W. Belden, for twenty years a resident of Lincoln township, died at the home of his brother in Galesburg, Ill., June 23, after a short illness of about a week. His brother, whom he was visiting, is over 80 years of age. Mr. Belden had been with his brother a few weeks. One the receipt of the news of his death, Mark Belden, his son, immediately started for the remains. The funeral took place, Saturday. He was buried in the Dexter cemetery from the Presbyterian church, Rev. Taylor, of Stuart, conducting the services. There was a large attendance of his old friends and neighbors.

The deceased was born Jan. 22, 1821, in Greenfield, Saratoga county, N.Y. He was reared on a farm. When he was four years of age, the family moved to Geneseo county, where he resided with them until he was 18 years of age. He then came west to Knox county, Ill., near Galesburg, where he engaged in farming until the spring of 1876. He then moved to Lincoln township, Adair county, Iowa, where he established his home.

He was loved and respected by his neighbors, who will always hold his memory sacred as that of a sincere, Christian man; a good neighbor and a faithful husband and father. His aged partner preceded him to the other world only a few weeks. She died April 11. He leaves four daughters and two sons, all married and have established families. They are: Mrs. John Cook, Mrs. Osborn, of Bayard; Mrs. Barnett, Mrs. Chapman, of Greenfield; Mark and Roy Belden.
