Earl L. Clayton, 59, of Dexter, died Friday, February 13, 2015 at Taylor House Hospice after a 13-year battle with cancer. Funeral services were held Tuesday, February 17, 2015 at the Dexter Methodist Church with Pastor Cris Decious officiating. Organist was Sharon Swartz, and soloist Kathy Hopkins sang “In The Garden,” “How Great Thous Art,” “The Old Rugged Cross” and “On Eagle’s Wings.” The visitation on Monday, February 16, 2015 at the Dexter United Methodist Church included a tribute by the Dexter Fire Department.

Casket bearers were Dennis Schirm, Jamie Schirm, Jason Schirm, Joe College, TJ Morehouse, Frank Clayton and Curt Beck. Honorary bearers were Sheila Thomas, Alexander Thomas, Alysia Reed, James Curtis Beck II, Amber Beck, Ashley Beck, Colton Beck and Wyatt Beck.

Burial was in Dexter Cemetery.

Earl was born July 20, 1955 to Maylon Dale and Kathryn (Cly) Clayton in Greenfield, He grew up and spent most of his life in Dexter and attended Dexfield Schools.

In 1972, he began working for RaMark in Dexter where he was employed for 35 years before their closing in 2008. After that, he worked at Casey’s General Store part-time in Dexter, a job he enjoyed, especially being able to visit with friends.

Earl served on the Dexter Fire Department for 41 years, this was Earl’s greatest enjoyment. Throughout this time, those on the fire department became an extension of his family.

He enjoyed attending stockcar races and being in the pits. He loved working on race cars, and attended races for many years at many tracks. In his spare time, he enjoyed being outdoors, hunting, bowling and visiting with old and new friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Maylon and Kathryn Clayton.

Survivors include his siblings, Mary Beck, Jane Clayton, Dale “Frankie” Clayton and Sharon Clayton, nieces, Sheila (Ronald) Thomas and Autumn Sanders, nephew, Kurt (Tonya) Beck, great nieces and great-nephews, Alexander Thomas, Alysia Reed, James Curtis Beck II, Amber Beck, Ashley Beck, Colton Beck and Wyatt Beck, special friends, The Schirm Family, Dexter Fire Department Family, Earl’s Racing Family, and other family and friends.
