Ruby Darlene Murray
Burkesville, KY/Waukee, IA

Ruby D. Murray, widow of Duane Patrick Murray, passed away Sunday, February 12, 2017 at the age of 98 in Livingston, TN. The only daughter of Mary Jane and Roy Earl Sloan, Ruby was born in Linn Township, Dallas County, Ia on December 18, 1918. She attended school at Redfield and Linden. After graduating from Linden High School, class of 1936, Ruby began work in Des Moines where she met her future husband, Duane Murray. They were married on November 23, 1942, in Jackson, Mississippi where Duane was serving the Army. Over the years, the couple attended several reunions of his army unit across the US and once served as hosts to a large group of veterans and their families.

For several years, Ruby was active in Toastmistrisses and was a national runner up at an annual contest.

She also enjoyed writing poetry, performing on radio while in her 20's, speaking at her church, and volunteering for organizations serving her Dallas County communities. Ruby even had a good time cleaning corn for the Adel Corn Festival. She also led a group of TOPS in Adel as a TOPS cop.

Ruby worked as an Iowa Sales Office Manager fgor Ralston-Purina for about 20 years. She also worked for Dr. Howe at Hy-Line International in Dallas Center until her retirement in the 1980's.

As world travelers for many years, the couple visited Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Ireland, and the British Isles. Entertaining foreign guests as members of the Des Moines Friendship Force was a special memory for them.

She was preceded in death by her parents and all eight brothers and their wives, Charles (Bonnie) Sloan, Archie (Nina) Sloan, WIlbur (Hazel) Sloan, Leslie (Esther) Sloan, Richard (Rowena) Sloan, Gerald (Dorthy) Sloan, Marvin "Todd" (Pauline) Sloan, Harold "Glenn" (Helen) Sloan. She is survived by several nieces and nephews and many friends.

Graveside services will be held 1:30 p.m. Monday, February 20, 2017 at West Linn Cemetery near Linden, IA with Pastor Doug Jones from Redfield Christian Church presiding. Services were provided by Hall Funeral Home, LLC in Celina, TN and Iles-Brandt Chapel in Dallas Center, IA. Online condolences will be welcomed at Iles Care.com.
