Earlham Echo – Earlham, Iowa
November 13, 1941

Mrs. Mira Mendenhall of the Bear Creek neighborhood has received word of the death of her brother, Alfred J. Hadley, at Paonia, Colorado, on October 29. On October 9 he underwent an operation for facial neuralgia and never regained consciousness, though life itself lingered for almost three weeks.

Alfred Hadley was born to Isaac and Susanna Hadley near Danville, Indiana, March 12, 1864. When only four years of age he moved with his parents and other members of the family to the Bear Creek neighborhood, which was his home for some 25 years. He was graduated from the Dexter Normal School and attended Penn College at Oskaloosa for two years. He taught school several years. For one or two years in the early 90’s he was principal of the Earlham school.

On December 24, 1891 he was united in marriage to Rhoda E. Hibbs. To them three sons were born: Beryl of Oliver, Colorado; Clair of Paonia, Colorado; and Ivor of Los Angeles, California.

On account of ill health Alfred Hadley removed to Paonia, Colorado more than 45 years ago. There he engaged in fruit farming and made a rather remarkable recovery of good health. He was one of the early settlers at Paonia, and took a very active part in the development of the community. He was prominent in the counsels of the Friends Meeting at Paonia, served on the local board of education, and held various local and state offices in the Farmers Union. He was several times a delegate to the national conventions of the latter organization.

Death came to his companion, Rhoda Hadley, in January 1923. In August, 1924 he married Mrs. Adeline Couch who survives him. Beside Mira Mendenhall, his only surviving sister, Alfred Hadley leaves nephews, nieces, and other relatives who live in the Earlham and Bear Creek communities.
