PERRY – Funeral services for Mrs. Walter P. (Grace M.) Portugal, 92, of Rowley Memorial Masonic Home in Perry, a resident of Newton for almost 30 years, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, June 13, at the Rowley Memorial Chapel in Perry.

Dr. Richard Bentzinger, pastor of the Newton First United Methodist Church, will conduct the services. Burial will be at 4 p.m. Thursday at the Newton Union Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Wallace-Pence Funeral Home in Newton after 5 p.m. today, June 11.

Visitation with the family will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday June 12, at the funeral home.

Memorials to the Rowley Memorial Masonic Home in Perry or the Newton First United Methodist Church will be accepted.

Mrs. Portugal died Monday, June 10, at the Masonic Home.

Survivors are a son, O. W. Portugal of Louisville, Ky., a daughter, Mrs. Harold (Leona) Paschal of Newton; four granddaughters; and five great-grandchildren.

Also surviving is s sister, Frances L. Korst of Fort Pierce, Fla.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, June 23, 1946, a son, Walter, killed in action during World War II in Luxembourg in January, 1945, four sisters, a brother and a grandson, Larry Don Paschal.

The daughter of Lee A. and Minnie Jane Mick Davis, she was born Aug. 4, 1892 in Kirksville, Iowa, and attended Kirksville schools and William Penn College in Oskaloosa.

She was married June 3, 1915 in Mahaska County.

Mrs. Portugal resided in Mahaska and Polk Counties for many years before moving to Newton, where she resided for 28 years. Later she moved to Lake County, Calif., returning to Newton in December, 1977.

She had resided at the Rowley Memorial Masonic Home in Perry for the last four years. ~ Newspaper unknown, possibly The Des Moines (IA) Register or The Newton (IA) Daily News Tues 11 June 1985.
