Joseph Gllbreath, father of Mrs. Mary E. Sweeley, died at her home Tuesday night following an illness of about twelve weeks. Short funeral services will be held at the Arnold Funeral home Thursday morning at 10:30 conducted by the Rev. E. F. Hagee. The body will then be taken to Adel where funeral services will be held at the Christian church, in charge of, the Rev. Hagee, assisted by the Rev Sippel of Adel, at 2:30. Burial will be made in Oakdale cemetery at Adel.Obituary
Joseph Gllbreath was born June 15, 1849, in La Port county Indiana, and was the son of John and Mary Case Gilbreath. He came from a line of long lived ancestors, his grandmother Elizabeth Sanderson, having lived to be 106. The family came from Kentucky.In Indiana the family lived on the Pottawattamie reservation as the father, who had served in the Black Hawk war, was a great friend of the Indians.
In 1853 the family moved to Iowa and located on a farm near Strawberry Point. The family moved to Decorah in 1857 and remained there a year, moving to Des Moines in 1858. Here the father died. Mr. Gilbreath lived in and around Des Moines for a number of years. He worked for the Rock Island railroad and helped build the line from Des Moines to Council Bluffs. He also worked as a teamster, hauling sand and rock at the time the present state capitol was built.
He was married to Mary Margaret Coburn on Jan. 26,. 1876, and to them six children were born, three of whom survive.
The family moved to Dallas county about 1890 and settled at De Soto where Mr. Gilbreath engaged in business for several years. They then moved to Adel and that town was his home until he came to Lenox with his daughter in 1929. Mrs. Gilbreath died in 1907.
He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Mary E. Sweeley of Lenox and Mrs. Blanche Jones of Minneapolis, and one son, J. W. Gilbreath, and four grandchildren.
Mr. Gilbreath suffered a stroke of paralysis a year ago last April and although he recovered from this he was never strong again. He became confined to his bed about three months ago and steadily lost strength.
