Ray Hirsch
June 23, 1924 - October 31, 2000

Ray Hirsch was born on June 23, 1924, in Des Moines, Iowa, the son of Walter and Madge Garton Hirsch, and following a sudden stroke, died on October 31, 2000.

Ray graduated from North High School in 1942. He enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard and was assigned to a destroyer escort in the Mediterranean.

Ray married Lena Brown on June 9, 1945, and their union was blessed with two children, Trudy and Mark.

Ray worked as a meat cutter, carpenter, and aluminum awning manufacturing manager in Des Moines, Indiana and Wisconsin. He moved back to Iowa in 1954 and started farming in Bondurant, St. Charles, and Patterson before moving to the Dexter area in 1963.

Ray loved to farm and loved to work. He started out most mornings by going to the Dexter Cafe with his dog Lucy for conversation and coffee. He really enjoyed visiting with his friends. He would make regular visits to be with friends at the American Legion in Dexter. Ray's pride and joy was his children and grandchildren.

Ray leaves the following family to celebrate his life: wife Lena of Dexter; daughter Trudy Duncan and husband John of Hawaii; son Mark and wife Tricia of Dexter; sister Violet Williamson of St. Charles; brother Paul Hirsch of Boone; grandchildren Tony Duncan, Amber Duncan, Jason Hirsch, Heather and husband Dan Konevitch, Marty Hirsch, great-grandson Daniel Konevitch, and many nieces and nephews, and friends.

Ray was preceded in death by his parents and twin sons Gary and Gregory.

Burial was in the Dexter cemetery.
