The deceased who was borm MARTHA BREWSTER and was a descendant of NATHAN BREWSTER and HANNAH PARKER and was a settler of New York state. In May of 1824,she was married to "Uncle" POWELL HOFFat marietta, Ohio, who in the speing of 1855 (the couple and their children) migrated to Dallas county and the state of Iowa where they purchased and cleared the land and established what would later be known as the "Hoff Settlement" lying between Grimes and Dallas Center.
"Aunt Martha" was familiarly known to the people of the farming community and was universally loved and esteemed by all who know her, as a devoted wife and mother and a devoted Christian lady.
Althought upon the eve of her there were and tenth year Mrs. Hoff had until quite recently enjoyed good health. Within the past three or four years, howver she has met with a most unfortunate affliction. By degrees her eyesight has faded finally leaving her in total darkness. Her hearing, however, had now bee in the least impared, and up to the day of her death, she retained her usual strength and vigor of mind.
Her loss is keenly felt by her relatives, who have the heartfult sympathy of all their friends in their deep bereavement.
