Services were March 31, 1996 for Emil H. Hargens Jr., 77, of Arthur at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ida Grove. The Rev. John Schauer and the Rev. Andrew Currao officiated with burial in Hayes Township Cemetery, south of Arthur, under the direction of Christensen-Ciha Funeral Home.

Mr. Hargens died March 28 at Morningside Care Center in Ida Grove.

Mr. Hargens was born June 2, 1918, in Grant Township, Ida County, the son of Emil and Clara (Marth) Hargens. He married Margaret Janet Currie on Nov. 27, 1941, in Battle Creek. The couple farmed in the Grant and Hayes Township areas of Ida County for many years. They moved to Arthur in 1982 and retired from farming in 1983.

Mr. Hargens was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ida Grove. He served with the local ASCS office, was president of the board for senior citizen housing in Arthur and was an active volunteer in the construction of the Arthur Community building.

Survivors include-his wife; a son and his wife, Thomas and Beth Hargens of Waukee; two daughters and their husbands, Anne and Todd Ohmart of Cumming and Jeanette and Keith Krommenhoek of Hutchinson, Minn.; eight grandchildren; two sisters, Florence Miller and Frances and her husband, Donald Barrett, all of Ida Grove; two brothers and their wives, Clarence and Fran Hargens of Hayden Lake, Idaho, and Raymond and Hattie Hargens of Ida Grove; two sisters-in-law, Lydia Hargens of Holstein and Mildred Hargens of Battle Creek and two aunts, Edna Janssen of Ida Grove and Mabel Magnuson of Cherokee.
