Mrs. John Wive ( Mary Ann Gustus) Victim of the Flu

On Sunday afternoon, 19 March 1939, Victor and William Gustus received word by phone that their sister, Mrs. John Wive, nee Mary Ann Gustus, of Sioux City, had passed away that day after a few days illness with the flu. She had just returned from DeKalb, Illinois where she had cared for her sister, Mrs. C. O. Larson, who had been quite ill.

Mrs. Wive was born at DeKalb, 10 Dec. 1876, coming her with her mother in the year of 1881 when they settled on the Gustus homestead, 4 1/2 miles northwest of Kiron, where she grew to young womanhood. In 1890 she went to Sioux City where she was employed a number of years. 30 May 1899 she was united in marriage to John Wive of Sioux City, and where they continued to make their home. To this union 7 children were born, 4 daughters and 3 sons. At the time of her death she was 62 years, 3 months and 9 days. Of late years Mrs. Wive had been a competent and much sought practical nurse.

She is survived by her husband, the 7 children, one at Yankton, S.D., one at Renhult, Minnesota, one at Austin, Minnesota and four at Sioux City, 5 grandchildren, 1 sister, Mrs. C. O. Larson, at DeKalb, Illinois, 3 brothers, Oscar at Sioux City, Victor and William at Kiron, and many friends who mourn her departure. She was preceded in death by her parents, 1 brother and 2 sisters.

On receiving the sad news Victor Gustus took the bus Monday morning for Sioux City followed by his brother, William, early Tuesday, morning to attend the funeral which was held from a funeral home on Tuesday afternoon. Interment was also made in a Sioux City cemetery.
