Mary Charlotta Gustafsdotter Johnston Peacefully Passes

Mrs. Nels Johnston passed peacefully away in her home 1 mile north and 1/2 mile west of Kiron on Friday morning, at 5 o'clock, 20 Nov. 1936, at the age of 80 years, 2 months and 8 days. Mrs. Johnston had always enjoyed good health until the last year when it began to fail her. She was only bed ridden the last week when she was under the care of a nurse. Her husband has been confined to his bed the past year, suffering a stroke about a year ago.

Mrs. Mary Charlotta Johnson was the only child of Mr. and Mrs. Gustaf Peterson. She was born 12 Septa 1856, in Figeholm, Småland, Sweden, coming to America with her parents when she was about twelve years old. They came directly to Crawford County where they endured the many hardships of the early pioneers. They lived in a dug-out for a while. For more than seventy-five years Mrs. Johnston has resided in Crawford and Ida County.

She was united in marriage to Nels Johnston on 6 Jan 1882. They were among the few who had the privilege of celebrating their Golden wedding which was in 1932.

This union was blessed with seven children, 4 sons and 3 daughters, the one son, Elmer, who died in 1928. Those who mourn her going are the aged husband and the six living children, namely: Robert of Kiron, Emma, Mrs. Otto Ang of Arthur; Sophia, Mrs. Walter Carlson of Kiron; Albert Johnston of Englewood, Colorado, Margaret at home and Martin of Kiron. She also leaves seven grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, many other relatives and a host of friends.

Mrs. Johnston was baptized in the Lutheran faith in Sweden. She was a lovely woman of a quiet nature. She was always kind and congenial, loyal wife and a good neighbor and friend.

Funeral services were held on Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Evangelical Free Church conducted by the pastor, Rev. H. A. Faugerstrom. Many came to pay their last respects to the departed one. The floral offerings were beautiful. A musical quartette, composed of Myrtle Nelson, Doris Bloom, Milton Nelson and Newell Clauson sang "In the Sweet Bye and Bye" and Doris Bloom and Doris Sederberg sang "We will Understand" in a duet, with Miss Jeanette Cedergren accompanying at the piano.

The pallbearers were three grandsons, Kenwood and Wilmar Ang and Willard Carlson and Ernest Anderson, George and Bert Lindstrom. Interment was made in the family plot in the Kiron Cemetery. Peace be to her memory.

The one son, Albert, who is a patient in the Sanitarium at Englewood, Colorado was not able to come for the funeral.
