Clarence John Kortman of Mapleton, the son of Clarence and Burnita Nielsen Kortman was born September 21, 1945 at Sioux City, Iowa. He died April 22,1978 3 miles north of Ricketts, having reached the age of 32 years, 7 months and 1 day.
As a young boy he lived in Charter Oak. He graduated from Charter Oak High School in 1963. He then went to Morningside College in Sioux City graduating in 1968. He worked as a stock boy at Younkers while at Morningside and in his senior year he became a buyer for Younkers. After graduation he worked for the Crawford County Extension and the Hoffman Insurance Agency in Moorhead, then moving to Mapleton where he worked for the First State Bank for the last five years.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Charter Oak, Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity, Masonic Lodge AF-AM, the Abu Bekr Shrine, the Mapleton Rotary, the Mapleton Jaycees, and the Mapleton Club.
He was a former member of the town council of Charter Oak, past president of the Mapleton Club, co-chairman of the Mapleton Centennial Committee and was a member of the Commericial and Community Club in Charter Oak and Ute.
Services were held on Tuesday, April 25, 1978 at the United Methodist Church at Charter Oak at 2:30 p.m. with Rev. Howard Ball and Rev. Louis Aitken officiating. Burial was in the Charter Oak Cemetery at Charter Oak. Pallbearers were Tom Martin, Charles Lee, James Herdliska, John Holland, Larry Arnold, Tom Misfeldt, Alan O'Neal and Gary Thies. Honorary organizations were the Management and Employees of First State Bank, Mapleton Centennial Central Committee and Masonic Lodges of Mapleton, Charter Oak and Ute.
Survivors include his mother, Burnita of Charter Oak; maternal grandmother, Mrs. Magritha Nielson of Charter Oak; sisters, Mrs. Edwin (Judy) Cloeter of Port Huron, Michigan, and Mrs. Loren (Julie) Strait of Crawford, Nebraska; niece and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father.
