Andrew Kahler, Pioneer Resident, Died Tuesday

Andrew Kahler, pioneer resident of this community, passed away at his home just north of Schleswig on Tuesday afternoon, March 3rd. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at the Gottburg Funeral Home at 1:45 and at 2:00 at Friedens Evangelical church. Rev. A. F. Rinne will be in charge of the services.

Andrew Kahler was born December 3, 1854, on the Island of Fehmarn, near Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. He had reached the age of 87 years, and 3 months. As a child he was baptized and later confirmed. At the age of 16 he came to America and lived for a year in Blue Island, IL. From there he moved to Davenport, Iowa, where he worked for thee years. In 1875 he came to Schleswig and has lived in this community for the past 66 years. A year after he came here he purchased one of the first threshing machines in this community. During the fall and winter months for the next several years he threshed in the community; and in the spring and summer months he broke the virgin prairies of the surrounding territory.

Mr. Kahler plowed up the prairie where now the town of Schleswig stands. He was a good neighbor, and an interesting person to visit with, for he enjoyed relating the experiences of pioneer life. The Kahler family lived for 30 years five miles northwest of Schleswig and for the past 28 years, three fourths of a mile north of town.

He was united in marriage to Katherine Lauenhagen in 1883. Four children blessed this union; two sons and two daughters. Mrs. Kahler proceeded her husband in death in 1933. Since that time his daughter, Ella and two sons have lovingly cared for him. He leaves to mourn his death, his children: Lena, Mrs. W.H. Schroeder, of Sioux City, Henry, Ella and Willie at home; one grandson, Arthur Schroeder of Chicago, and a granddaughter, Mrs. A S Williams of West Point, NE; a half brother, James Bruhn of Bloomfield, NE; three half sisters, Mrs. Dora Lafrentz of Bloomfield, NE, Mrs. Marguerite Lafrentz of Chinook, MT, and Mrs. Julius Muhl of Toronto, Iowa.
