The Molony Family Most Prominent in
County During Early Days of CountyMrs. A. D. Molony, one of the pioneers of the county, quietly passed away at her home in this city at 8 o’clock Saturday morning. Her death came suddenly and scarcely without any warning, notwithstanding, her illness was of long duration, making her entirely helpless and a constant sufferer.
During her protracted illness, her daughters, and especially Mrs. D. O. Johnson, with whom she lived, were her faithful attendants, ministering to her wants and giving her every attention that love and affection could suggest.
The deceased, whose maiden name was Bridget Sheeran, was born in Longford County, Ireland, on March 28, 1835, being at the time of her death 77 years, 1 month and 20 days of age.
She was a member of a family of twelve persons, and the last one to pass away. She came to this country with her parents at the age of eight years and located in the state of Kentucky. She was married to Andrew D. Molony April 20th, 1854, and in 1861 came with her husband to Denison, Iowa.
To this union were born six children, four of whom survive the deceased, namely: Judith, now Mrs. C. T. Marshall, of Charter Oak, Iowa; Mary, now Mrs. Phelan, of Omaha, Neb.; Kate, now the widow of D. O. Johnson, living in Denison; and Mattie, now Mrs. Mahoney, lately moved to Des Moines. The other two children departed this life many years ago. Mr. Molony, the husband, died January 1st, 1888.
The old settlors in the county will remember when Mr. and Mrs. Molony came from their Kentucky home and located in this county. For many years there was no more prominent family in the county, and it is safe to say that every person in the county felt that they were welcome as guests at the Molony home, and many of them availed themselves of the opportunity, not only of a meal, but of staying overnight at this hospitable home.
Mr. Molony was for twenty-five years a prominent official of the county, most of the time serving in the office of the county auditor, which position he held until the time of his death.
The deceased was in every sense the helpmate of her husband, and never felt she was doing too much to join in helping in making and holding friends, even at a sacrifice, and she never counted it a sacrifice to entertain her husband’s friends during the time of his political career.
She will be mourned, not only by her children and relatives, but by a large number of friends living in various localities in the county.
The funeral services were held on Monday forenoon at 10 o’clock from St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church of this city, the Rev. Father Farrelly officiating, after which the body was taken to the Catholic cemetery for burial.
