Andrew Garfield Carothers was born June 25, 1857 at Knox, Guernsey, Ohio to William Carothers and Sarah Dales who had emigrated to Ohio from Ireland. He was the eighth of twelve children. His siblings were: John, William Dales, John II, George Patterson, Margaret Jane, James, Agnes E., Samuel M., Sarah Ann, Martha, Mary.

Family can be found in the 1860 census living at Liberty, Guernsey, Ohio: William Carothers 43, Sarah Carothers 49, William D Carothers 16, John Carothers 14, George Carothers 12, Margaret J Carothers 9, Agnes Carothers 7, Andrew Carothers 3, James Carothers 5.

Found in the 1870 census at Knox, Guernsey, Ohio: William Carothers 55, Sarah Carothers 51, James Carothers 17, Jane Carothers 19, Agness Carothers 15, Andrew Carothers 12.

Andrew Carothers moved west from Ohio to Crawford County, Iowa. He met and married Agnes E Graham on December 20, 1888 at Manilla, Crawford, IA.

The couple had at least 4 children:
Sarah (born April 1891 Iowa);
Emily ( or Effie?, born November 1898 Iowa);
Andrew Garfield (born June 21, 1908 Manilla, Crawford, IA, died June 1966); and
William (born Iowa).

1900: Andrew Brothers 41, Agnes Brothers 28, Sarah Brothers 9, Emily Brothers 1, Sarah E Graham 57 (mother in law, born March 1842 Prince Edward Island), Lou Miller 29 (boarder); Andrew working as a day laborer.

Andrew Garfield Carothers died April 16, 1908 at Manilla, Nishnabotna, Crawford, IA. Buried at the Nishnabotna Cemetery, Crawford, IA.
