Merle Herman Schillerberg was born July 24, 1924, the son of Herman and August Tech Schillerberg. He died Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa at the age of eighty-three.

Merlle was born in Charter Oak, Iowa and was baptized in Christ August 31, 1924, and confirmed April 10, 1938, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Hanover Township, Charter Oak, Iowa. He received his education in country school near his home. After school, he began working for his father on the farm. He was united in marriage and was blessed with the birth of three daughters. Merle moved into Charter Oak where he worked for the lumber company, the Charter Oak Grain Co., in addition to working for the City of Charter Oak. He was also employed at IBP in Denison.

He was a jack of all trades, having a knack for plumbing, electrical work, and painting the exteriors of homes and businesses. He was obsessed with neatness, as everything had its place. In his spare time, Merle tended his gardens. He had both vegetable, and flower gardens and was especially fond of his roses. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one granddaughter, Jennifer Brink; two brothers, Clarence Schillerberg and his wife, Betty; Harold Schillerberg and his wife, Darlene; two sisters, Alice Aldag and her husband, Louis; and Milda Backhaus and her husband, Harry. Survivors include his three daughters, Marsha Beerman of Denison; Carlotta Brink of Manilla; and Cindy Phipps and her husband, Jim of Castana, Iowa; six grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; several nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were held 10:30 a.m., Thursday, August 23,2007 at St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak, Iowa. Rev. Richard Merrill officiated the services and grave side rites held at Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison, Iowa. Organist Marjoria Neddermeyer provided accompaniment for the congregational hymns "Amazing Grace," "How Great Thou Art," and "Now Thank We All Our God." Those serving as pallbearers were Paul Bockelmann, Andrew Phipps, Rick Staley, Kevin Beermann, Keith Rhodes, and Keith Brink. A Prayer Service was held at 7 p.m., Wednesday at the Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak. The family invited everyone in attendance to join them for fellowship and lunch served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak was in charge of the arrangements.
