Mabel G. Nelson was born April 11, 1909, the daughter of Henry and Bertha Frahm Brockman. She died Sunday, July 29, 2007 at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa at the age of ninety-eight. Mabel was born on a farm north west of Charter Oak, Iowa. She received her education in a rural school near her home. After completing her education, she helped her family on the farm and helped as needed for other families in the area.

January 12, 1936, Mabel was united in marriage to David Nelson in Sioux City, Iowa. The couple were blessed with the birth of two children.

She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at St. John Lutheran Church. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who cared for her family with devotion. In her leisure time, she enjoyed quilting at the Senior Center in Charter Oak. Socializing with her family and friends was a joy to her and she was always available for a game of Euchre and other card games with her friends at the Senior Center, and at the Senior Housing in Denison. She enjoyed traveling to area nursing homes to visit with the residents with the Lamplighter Club at St. John Lutheran Church. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak, their Ladies Aid, and Lamplighters where she received her forty year pin as a volunteer at Eventide. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, David in 1969, one son, Dennis in 1971; five brothers, Frank, Clarence, William, Carl and Fred Brockman ; and one sister Sadie Carstensen. Survivors include, one daughter, Marlene Lahr and her husband, Bob of Council Bluffs, Iowa; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, July 31, 2007 at St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak, Iowa. Rev. Richard Merrill officiated the services and grave side rites held at Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Organist Art Beeck provided accompaniment for the congregational hymns "Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound," "I Know That My Redeemer Lives," and "Abide With Me, Fast Falls the Eventide." Those serving as Honorary pallbearers were Colleen Fettin, Timothy Fettin, Craig Lahr, Sharon Lahr, Mary Beth Fox, Russell Fox, and Jennifer Seydlitz. Those serving as pallbearers were Andrea Huebner Boyer, Milfred Nemitz, Bob Janett, Charles Dreibelbis, Walter Huebner and Dennis Huebner. The family invited everyone in attendance to join them for fellowship and lunch served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak was in charge of the arrangements.
