Clifford LaVelle Waterbury

Clifford LaVelle, son of Henry and Edna (Grage) Waterbury was born September 6, 1943, at home in Manilla, Iowa. He attended Manilla Schools “walking up hill both ways, barefoot in a snow storm.” After his mother’s death in 1958, Cliff lived with Ray and Josie Lingle in Manilla.

On September 23, 1961, Cliff was united in marriage with Vicki Atkins at the Methodist Church in Manilla. Five children were born to this union. The couple spent the first year of their marriage in Council Bluffs where Cliff worked at Mastercraft Furniture Store. They then moved back to Botna where he was a hired man for George and Barbara Doyel. This relationship turned into a lifelong friendship. Cliff then worked for MJM Manufacturing in Manning and, for ten years, across the Midwest in line construction for L. E. Meyers.

In 1976, Cliff and Vicki purchased the tavern at 417 Main Street in Manning and made a successful family-run business known as Cliff’s Place. They expanded over time and operate to this day with much of the family still participating.

Cliff enjoyed his many humanitarian trips to Mexico with family and friends. While there they distributed clothing, food and treats to the local families. In his younger years, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and wildlife. In more recent years, he had fun golfing with his sons. He even achieved an elusive hole-in-one on hole #5 at the Manning-Manilla Golf Course on Easter Sunday in 2000.

Cliff was a family man and loved being with his grandchildren, teaching them colors using M&M candy and singing “She’ll Be Coming ‘Round The Mountain”. The annual Iowa State Fair trip was the highlight for twenty years.

Cliff had not been feeling well the past year. However his death on Monday, July 2, 2007, was sudden and unexpected. He died at Manning Regional Healthcare Center, Manning, at the age of 63 years, 9 months and 26 days.

Preceding Cliff in death are his parents; daughter Barbara at one month of age; brothers Merle ‘Sonny’ Waterbury, Jack Waterbury, Bill Waterbury, Delaine Waterbury and Bob Waterbury; and sister Aloha Enenbach.

He is survived by his wife Vicki Waterbury of Manning; four children: Jim Waterbury and wife Kris of Manning; Jeff Waterbury and wife Mary Ann of Ogden; Jon Waterbury of Manning and Joni and husband Raul Salazar of Cedar Rapids; 10 grandchildren: Adam, Alisa, Rhea, Megan, Allen, Zachary, Ryne, Brooke, Matt and Lucia; two sisters Helen and husband Bernie Higgins of Belle Plaine and Candace and husband Jurgen Stobbe of Manilla; two sisters-in-law Sallee Rielly of Canton, SD and Judy Lee of Manning; brother-in-law Steve Atkins and wife Linda of Cedar Rapids; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many patrons and lifelong friends.
