Lyle Allan Woodward, Sr. passed away in Denison on April 1, 2007 at the age of 68, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Lyle was born on July 10, 1938 to Russell Delno and Blanche Emily (Beers) Woodward in rural Monona County. Lyle graduated from Mapleton High School in 1956 where he was an All-State Honorable Mention basketball player and a standout baseball player, as well. He graduated from Parsons College in Fairfield, Iowa in 1970. He married Arlene May Kafton on August 8, 1959 and raised 5 wonderful children.

They made their home on an acreage near Kiron in 1971, where they remained for the majority of their lives. Lyle devoted his life to his wife and family. He worked for 35 years for IBP until his retirement in 2000. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Kiron where he served as an usher, a trustee, and as a deacon.

Lyle enjoyed watching his children participate in sporting events, and loved to spend his free time playing his guitar, singing, fishing and golfing with family and friends. Lyle and Arlene also instituted the "Woodward Family Christmas Weekend", which was held annually at a hotel, as a present to their grandchildren. He made a special effort to treasure his moments with all of his grandchildren.

Lyle is preceded in death by: his wife, Arlene, his father, Russell, his father-in-law, Herluf Kafton, two brothers, Rolland and Everett, one sister, Marilyn, and two grandchildren, Allison Woodward and Nathan Woodward. Survivors include: five children and their families, Lyle Jr. and Judy, Shawn, Chris, & Travis of Kiron, Dennis and Jill, Johnathan, Ellen, & Charles of Delano, MN, Bryan and Becky, Danielle & Heather of Palo, IA, Tina and Ben Schulte, Jacqueline, Michelle, & Stephen of Ravenwood, MO, and Rolland and Suzanne, Jackson & James of Ypsilanti, MI, his mother, Blanche Woodward of Onawa, IA, brothers and sisters-in-law, Mel and Myrna Woodward of Mapleton, Mary Woodward of Mapleton, Joe and June Woodward of Sioux City, E.B. and Darlene Woodward of Cherokee, Jerry and Jean Woodward of Wichita, KS, and Don and Sue Woodward of Ticonic, IA., mother-in-law, Wilma Kafton of Mapleton, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Wayne and Zola Kafton of Mapleton, Arvin and Carole Kafton of Mapleton, and Judy and Jim Moore of Fort Collins, CO, a very special friend, Diane Hupke of Battle Creek, IA, many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held 10:30 a.m., Thursday, April 5, 2007 at First Baptist Church in Kiron, Iowa. Rev. Wayne Fritzinger officiated the services and grave side rites held at the Kiron Cemetery in Kiron, Iowa. Roby Larson served as pianist, providing accompaniment for congregational hymns "How Great Thou Art," "The Old Rugged Cross," "In the Garden," and "Because He Lives." Those serving as pallbearers were Chuck Ballantine, John Gustafson, Herbert J. Turin, Steven Winquist, Alan Gustafson, and Conwell Larson. The family invited everyone in attendance to join them for fellowship and lunch served by the Ladies of the Church. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.
