Merlyn Henry "Hiney" Schnoor was born on September 27, 1919 at Bouton, Iowa to Henry and Lousia (Hussman) Schnoor. He graduated from Bouton High School in 1937. In 1941 he entered the United States Army Air Corps and served in the European conflict England, France, Holland, and Germany, landing on Normandy Beach. He met Alice Joan Vodenik and they were married on December 19, 1952 at the First Christian Church in Perry. For 10 years he worked at Arnold Brothers Swift and Company in Perry until it closed. He and his family then moved to Denison, Iowa in 1958 where he worked at Farmland Industries for 25 years. Merlyn and Joan returned to Perry in 2004.

Merlyn was a member of, and baptized at Christ Lutheran Church. He enjoyed fishing, camping, hunting, woodworking, gardening, music, big band and polka music, dancing, roller skating, watching old westerns and war movies, spending time with his grandchildren and visiting with family and friends.

He was preceded in death by parents Henry and Lousia Schnoor, and 3 sisters; Anna Capp, Amanda Doutrich, and Evelyn Heitkamp. He is survived by wife, Joan Schnoor, Perry, Iowa; daughter, Evelyn Louise Schnoor Clemenson and husband Curtis "Skip"; son, Douglas Merlyn Schnoor and wife Barbara; grandchildren; Clinton and Megan Clemenson, and Brian and James Schnoor, all of Des Moines, special family friends, Barbara Tucker and family of Huxley, Iowa, and the family dog, Cookie.

Funeral services for Merlyn "Hiney" Schnoor, age 87, of Perry were held on Friday, January 19, 2007, at 2:00 p.m. at Christ Lutheran Church at their new location in the Red Brick Building at the corner of Hwy. 141 and Hwy 169 near Bouton. Visitation was held on Thursday, January 18, 2007 from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. with the family present from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Carris Family Funeral Home. Burial was in the Violet Hill Cemetery in Perry. Contributions will be given to Christ Lutheran Church for the steeple or organ fund and may be left at the Funeral Home. Merlyn died on Monday, January 15, 2007 at Kavanagh House in Des Moines.
