Edwin H. Svoboda was born at Schuyler, Nebraska on June 19, 1929, the son of Joseph and Lillian Shonka Svoboda. He was raised there being graduated from the Schuyler High School with the class of 1946.

On July 8, 1948, he began his career serving his country in the United States Navy. After boot camp he attended Navy School at Kingsville, Texas and Lakehurst, New Jersey, served all over the world on the USS Midway.

While being stationed in Hawaii, Edwin was united in marriage with Patricia Spale on September 9,1959, at Barbers Point, Hawaii.

Their union was blessed with three sons, Jim, Bob and Mike. Following his marriage, Ed continued his Navy career being stationed at Spokane, Washington, and finished his career at Corpus Christi, Texas, where he retired from the Navy with the rank of Chief Petty Officer on October 20,1967.

Ed began his civilian career with Montgomery Ward in Fremont, Nebraska in 1967, transferring to Denison, Iowa, in 1971. In 1978, he started Eds Appliance Repair business in Denison.

He found great enjoyment in his work which he continued as long as his health permitted.

In his spare time Ed enjoyed football, especially the Nebraska Cornhuskers, camping, fishing, working crossword puzzles, and, most of all, spending time with his family.

He was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison.

Edwin died Saturday evening, November 25, 2006, at Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa, surrounded by his loving family.

At the time of his death he had been blessed with 77 years, 5 months and 6 days.

Edwin was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Marie Svoboda and Dorothy Leeper and one brother, Dick Svoboda.

Those remaining to cherish his memory include his wife, Patricia Svoboda of Denison, Iowa; three sons, Jim Svoboda and wife, Susan of Castaic, California, Bob Svoboda of Omaha, Nebraska, and Mike Svoboda and fiance, Jennifer Parmer of Palmdale, California; two grandchildren, Angel Svoboda of Houston, Texas, and Dustin Svoboda of Hollywood, California; one brother, Leonard Svoboda and wife, Judy of Omaha, Nebraska; one sister, Marge and husband, Chuck Metzler of Casper, Wyoming; nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.

A memorial mass was celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 29, 2006, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison, Iowa, with the Rev. Paul J. Kelly as Celebrant.

Others participating in the mass included servers, T. J. Pauley and Kristin Marten, Lector, Fred Spale and Eucharistic Minister, Tom Spale.

Music for the mass was provided by St. Rose of Lima Adult Choir singing, Be Not Afraid, Amazing Grace, On Eagles Wings and How Great Thou Art with Jean Cornelius serving as accompanist.

A special recorded selection, Wind Beneath My Wings was played following the mass. Military Honors were accorded by the American Legion Post 8, Denison, Iowa.

lnurnment will take place at a later date. Following the mass the family invited everyone to the St. Rose Parish Center for a time of fellowship and a luncheon prepared and served by St. Rose of Lima Ladies Guild. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.
