Mary Jean Hyde was born at St. Joseph, Missouri on December 22, 1924, the daughter of Henry Dutton and Hildred Hanna Toel. She was raised in St. Joseph where she was graduated from high school with the class of 1941. Following high school she furthered her education at Missouri Western College for two years before transferring to Simmons College in Boston where she received her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1945.

On June 2, 1947, Mary Jean was united in marriage with Russell Carlton Hyde at St. Joseph, Missouri. Their union was blessed with three children, Mary K, Jim and Sue.

They made their home briefly in Vinton, Iowa, where Russell was employed by his uncle before moving to Aledo, Illinois where they owned Hydes Store. In 1955 they moved to Denison, Iowa, and built Hydes Store, which they owned and operated until retiring in December of 1991.

While residing in Denison, Mary Jean enjoyed her memberships in the First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, P.E.O., Northwest Regional Library Board, Investment Club and bridge club. A full-time homemaker all of her life, Mary Jean loved caring for her family and, especially taking care of her grandchildren. She enjoyed cooking for her family, sewing and tending her flowers.

Russell died November 6, 1992 and Mary Jean continued to reside in Denison until moving to St. Joseph, Missouri to be near her daughter, Mary K, in 1995.

Mary Jean died Monday evening, October 31, 2006, at Saxton Woods Care Center in St. Joseph, Missouri. At the time of her death she had been blessed with 81 years, 10 months and 8 days.

Including her parents, Henry and Hildred Toel, and her husband, Russell, Mary Jean was preceded in death by her sister, JoAnne MaKeever.

Those remaining to cherish her memory include three children, Mary K Hyde of St. Joseph, Missouri, Jim Hyde and wife, Lucy of Creston, Iowa, and Sue Hyde and husband, Remsen Paul of Incline Village, Nevada; five grandchildren, Rachel Hyde of Beatrice, Nebraska, Jason Hyde of Creston, Iowa, Michael Hyde of Creston, Iowa, and Gwen and Mady Paul of Incline Village, Nevada; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, November 4, 2006, at the First United Methodist Church in Denison, Iowa, with the Rev. Alberta Ervin officiating. Music for the service included two congregational hymns, I Need Thee Every Hour and Amazing Grace with Glenn Rankin serving as organist. Honorary pallbearers included Robert C. Reimer, Ralph Borcherding, Dr. George Berry, Gregory KehI and Don Uker. Pallbearers were Jason Hyde, Michael Hyde, Rachel Hyde, Gwen Paul, Mady Paul, Jason Frerichs, Pat Rosauer, and Greg Miller. Interment was at Oakland Cemetery, Denison, Iowa. Following the interment the family cordially invited everyone to join them at Cronks in Denison for a luncheon and time of fellowship. A memorial has been established to the First United Methodist Church in Denison. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.
